Age suitability
Who Relffits is for.
The minimum age, what the store ratings actually mean, and an honest note about who should probably skip it.
You need to be at least 13 to use Relffits.
- The App Store lists Relffits at 13+.
- The Terms of Service require you to be 13 or older to create an account. If you are under 18, you need a parent or guardian's permission.
- Relffits is not built for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data.
- Relffits is not on Google Play yet. When it is, the badge there will read something different, because Google uses a separate rating system with its own per-country values. Same app, different rating body.
Why 13, and not younger
This one is about data, not content. There is nothing in Relffits a nine-year-old could not look at. The question is what the app would be collecting from them.
To give you a calorie target, Relffits needs your height, weight, age and sex. To analyse a meal, it sends what you typed or photographed to an AI model run by Google. That is personal data about a person's body, going to a third party.
- In the United States, COPPA requires verifiable parental consent before collecting personal information from a child under 13. Verifiable means more than a tick box, and building that properly is a real system with real failure modes.
- In the EU and UK, GDPR Article 8 puts the age at which someone can consent for themselves between 13 and 16, depending on the country. A floor below 13 is not available there whatever a US listing says.
So the choice was a 13 floor that is honest, or a younger floor plus a consent system we could not actually verify. We took the floor.
Why the store badge and the minimum age are different numbers
These get confused a lot, including by us until recently, so it is worth separating them.
A store age rating describes content: is there violence, gambling, mature language. A minimum age in the Terms describes who can agree to a contract and have their data processed. Apple does not require the two to match, and plenty of apps rated for young children ask for 13 in their terms.
Relffits originally shipped with a 9+ badge, which was Apple's own calculation from the content questionnaire and was fair enough on content alone. The problem was practical rather than philosophical: that badge is the first thing a parent sees, so it was inviting people the Terms would later turn away, by which point an account existed and a body weight had been typed in. The badge now reads 13+ to match. Nothing about the app changed; the number was wrong, not the product.
Who should probably skip this app
This is the part a marketing page would leave out.
If you are in treatment for an eating disorder, or you have a history of one, talk to your clinician before using Relffits. The app has a calorie target, a daily guessing game, streaks, a score and celebration screens. Those are exactly the mechanics treatment often asks people to put down for a while. The fact that Relffits is built to be outgrown does not change what it does on day one.
On what the research says, carefully. Among adults and college students, people who use diet and fitness tracking apps report more disordered-eating symptoms than people who do not, and heavier use goes with higher symptom scores. Those studies are observational. They cannot show that the apps caused anything, and there is a reasonable argument that why someone tracks matters more than whether they track. Adolescents specifically have barely been studied, and reviewers keep saying so. We read a gap in the evidence as a reason for caution, not as reassurance.
So 13 is a minimum, not a recommendation. If you are a teenager, or the parent of one, we would rather you spoke to a doctor or a registered dietitian before starting than took a store badge as medical clearance.
Relffits is not medical advice and is not a substitute for a physician or a registered dietitian.
If this is hitting close to home
The National Alliance for Eating Disorders runs a free helpline staffed by licensed clinicians, with referrals to every level of care, at 1-866-662-1235 (weekdays, 9am to 7pm Eastern).
For parents and guardians
If your teenager is asking to use this, here is what it does, in plain terms.
- There are no other people in it. No feed, no comments, no messaging, no profiles to find or be found by. Nothing anyone logs is ever public.
- No ads, no subscription, no paid tier, no in-app purchases. There is a link to a voluntary contribution page, and nothing in the app is ever locked behind it.
- Nothing goes to the AI without a tap. Before the first meal analysis, Relffits shows a screen listing exactly what would leave the device and waits for Allow. It can be declined, and it can be switched off later under Settings, then AI Analysis.
- Logs are encrypted before they sync. Profile and daily logs are encrypted on the device with a key derived from the account password or data passphrase. That also means a lost passphrase is unrecoverable, by us included.
- Everything can be deleted. Deleting the account in Settings removes the cloud copy. There is also a local data export if you want to see what is held first.
- The figures are estimates. Calorie and macro numbers come from an AI model, not a laboratory and not a verified database. We do not publish an accuracy rate because we have not validated one.
The full detail is in the Privacy Policy and the Terms of Service.
